Romana Elena is an artist whose practice bridges visual art, poetry, and geographic research. Her work explores emotional landscapes, from maternal wounds and femininity to broader questions of identity, love, psychology, and what it means to inhabit different cultural contexts.
Fueled by curiosity for the world beyond her village, Romana's journey has taken her from the Netherlands to Barcelona, Kenya, and now Cape Town, with many more travels shaping her worldview. She holds an MSc in Economic Geography and International Development from the University of Amsterdam, where she learned how environments shape human behavior, identity, wellbeing, and socio-economic development.
This multidisciplinary foundation continues to inform her creative practice, allowing her to connect insights from psychology, culture, space and place to create work that resonates aesthetically, emotionally, and intellectually.
Through her abstract paintings and sculptural works, she explores the complexities of womanhood, embracing both feminine and masculine energies within herself. She uses painting to connect with her feminine flow, while identifying sculpting as her more structured, masculine side.
Layered compositions speak to emotional complexity; while bold color palettes command attention, moving the viewer to experience warmth & joy. Her sculptures seem to just simply are, yet carry equally layered perspectives.
Currently working as Head of Product Operations at a tech platform, she previously worked as a hospitality and retail concept designer, translating narratives into spatial experiences that brought stories and brands to life.
The artistic medium changed, yet the practice and thinking remained the same: an ongoing exploration of people, place, emotion, and the systems that shape how we experience the world.
